Nova Scotia Coalition Against Cooke Aquaculture Files Supreme Court Appeal

A group made up of St. Mary's Bay Coastal Alliance, the Atlantic Salmon Federation, the LFA 34 Lobster Fishermen, the Freeport Community Development Association, and the Villages of Freeport, Tiverton, and Westport appealed to the Nova Scotia Supreme Court to prevent the establishment of what would be the largest fish farm in the province.

New Brunswick's Tobacco Lawsuit to be Joined by Manitoba and Nova Scotia

Three years since taking big tobacco firms to court for recovery of healthcare costs, the government of New Brunswick is about to welcome both Manitoba and Nova Scotia in its legal battle.

The Manitoba government said it intends to reach an arrangement with the consortium of law firms already hired by the New Brunswick government to handle its own province's litigation. The Nova Scotia government is also seeking a firm to take on its case on a contingency basis.

Manager in Town of Riverview Starts Online Petition to Fight Mobile Sign Ban

Justin Bird, a general manager of Olivier Soaps in the Town of Riverview, was forced to take down a mobile sign due to a new city by-law.

He was told by officials in April that according to the town's new zoning by-law, signs like his are prohibited. However, he was puzzled as to why similar signs are still erected throughout the city.

Over the next three months, the Fredericton City Police will be rewarding drivers who park their cars when starting their phone conversations as a way of thanking them for embracing the province's new distracted drivers law.

Rewards include a coupon for a free Pizza Hut pizza as well as a chance to win one of three Bluetooth devices provided by AML Communication Rogers.

Cycling physician Tom Demarco says he “absolutely” supports a Vancouver resident’s charter challenge of the provincial law requiring cyclists to wear helmets.

In August 2009, cyclist Ron van der Eerden decided to fight the $29 ticket he received for not wearing a helmet under Section 184 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Parks Canada Calls for Allowing Shotguns in Northern National Parks

Parks Canada proposed allowing researchers, soldiers, and some aboriginals to carry shotguns in Canada's northernmost national parks, in order to better protect them against violent polar bears. It plans to hold public consultations in communities near its northern parks, such as Auyuittuq National Park in Nunavut. If adopted, the firearm rule would apply to 10 national parks in the Northeast territories.

Federal appeals court rules NFL lockout is legal

The US 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis on April 25, 2011 put the NFL lockout on hold after the players said the work stoppage was causing them "irreparable harm". On Friday, a Federal appeals court ruled to throw out the judge's order, allowing NFL's lockout while the owners and players worked on reaching a new labor deal to start the 2011 season.
